OEM vs ODM
ODM designs and builds a product from scratch. OEM puts its own brand on that product and sells it.
OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer, and ODM stands for original design manufacturer. In current usage the ODM designs and builds a product from scratch, while the OEM puts its own brand on that product and sells it. That is close to backwards from the original meaning, when OEM referred to the company making a part that went inside someone else's finished product.
The pattern is clearest in servers and laptops. Dell, HPE, and Lenovo sell systems under their own names and call themselves the OEM. Large parts of that hardware are designed and built to spec by an ODM such as Quanta, Wiwynn, or Foxconn in Taiwan. Hyperscalers like Google and Meta often skip the OEM layer and buy straight from the ODM, following open designs published through the Open Compute Project.
Which one you buy from decides what happens when you need warranty support or a firmware fix. An OEM brand usually means a support contract, a validated hardware list, and one phone number to call. Going ODM direct can cut cost, but you take on the integration and support work the OEM would otherwise handle.
