SAS vs SATA vs NVMe
SAS, SATA, and NVMe are the three interfaces a drive connects through, and they differ in protocol, speed, and cost.
SAS, SATA, and NVMe are the three interfaces used to connect a drive to a server or PC. SATA is the consumer and entry-level interface, built for single hard drives and basic SSDs. SAS is its enterprise counterpart, dual ported and full duplex for redundant server storage. NVMe drops the old disk command set and talks straight to the PCIe bus.
SATA III tops out at 6 Gb/s, about 550 to 600 MB/s of real throughput, with a queue depth of 32. SAS-3 runs at 12 Gb/s per lane, and SAS-4, marketed as 24G, runs at 22.5 Gb/s. Dual porting keeps a drive reachable if one path fails. NVMe skips the disk protocol stack and rides PCIe lanes directly. A four-lane Gen4 NVMe SSD can push past 7,000 MB/s of sequential read, more than ten times a SATA drive. The spec also allows up to 65,535 I/O queues, each as much as 65,536 commands deep.
SATA still makes sense for boot drives and bulk storage where cost rules. SAS earns its place in arrays that need a redundant path to every drive. Anything latency sensitive or bandwidth heavy, from databases to training checkpoints, wants NVMe.
