A workstation is a desktop or tower built for sustained professional compute work such as CAD, rendering, or AI development.
A workstation is a desktop or tower computer built for sustained, demanding compute rather than office work or gaming. It pairs a workstation-class CPU, or a high core count desktop part, with ECC memory and a professional GPU. The chassis, power supply, and cooling are sized for hours at full load instead of short bursts, and the vendor validates the whole machine against professional software.
The platform gap shows in expansion. A consumer desktop CPU exposes about 24 PCIe lanes and takes 128 GB of memory across four slots. A Threadripper PRO or Xeon W platform gives 112 to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes and eight memory channels, supporting 1 TB or more of registered ECC memory. That is enough for several GPUs plus fast local storage at full width. A CAD seat might run a 24 core CPU, one professional GPU, and 128 GB of ECC memory. A deep learning box puts the money into two to four GPUs and 256 GB or more of system memory to stage datasets.
Buy workstation-grade parts when the machine runs unattended overnight jobs or feeds a render queue. For occasional CAD on a normal schedule, a well-specified consumer desktop is usually enough.
