Barebone server
A server chassis shipped with the motherboard, backplane, power supplies, and cooling installed, but no CPU, memory, storage, or GPUs.
A barebone server is a rack or tower chassis that ships with the motherboard, backplane, power supplies, and cooling already fitted and validated. The CPU, memory, storage, and any GPUs are left out, so the buyer specs those separately and installs them. Vendors power the chassis up before it leaves the factory, confirming the backplane addresses every bay and the power system sequences correctly.
A 2U unit typically takes one or two server CPUs, 16 to 32 DIMM slots, and 8 to 24 hot-swap drive bays. The same sheet metal covers builds from a single entry-level CPU to dual top-bin parts with every slot filled. Rack platforms sell this way because the chassis, backplane, and power system are the parts an integrator has no reason to re-engineer per order. Supermicro, Gigabyte, ASRock Rack, and Tyan sell most of their rack lineup unconfigured rather than as finished systems.
Buying one directly makes sense if you already hold the compute parts or want to pick every component. Budget a few hours per node for assembly and firmware. Check the qualified vendor list for memory and drives first, since unlisted DIMMs are a common reason a fresh build won't post.
