E1.S vs E3.S
E1.S is the short, narrow EDSFF SSD for dense 1U servers. E3.S is the wider EDSFF SSD, 76 mm across in Kioxia's 7.5 mm CD8P-R.
E1.S and E3.S are two EDSFF (Enterprise and Datacenter Standard Form Factor) SSD shapes. SNIA defines E1.S in SFF-TA-1006, the 1U Short Device Form Factor, and E3.S in SFF-TA-1008. Both carry NVMe over PCIe, but at 33.75 mm and 76 mm wide in the drives below, a bay cut for one does not take the other.
Kioxia's XD7P E1.S is 33.75 mm wide and 118.75 mm long, in 9.5 mm or 15 mm thickness, with a PCIe Gen4 x4 link and capacities up to 7.68 TB. Kioxia's CD8P-R E3.S is 76 mm wide, 112.75 mm long and 7.5 mm thick, with a PCIe Gen5 x4 link and capacities up to 15.36 TB. Solidigm's D7-PS1010 E1.S comes as a 9.5 mm drive, air-cooled or for cold plate liquid cooling, and as a 15 mm air-cooled drive. Solidigm lists 25 W maximum average active power.
Pick the form factor from the chassis, not the drive. Read the thickness on the quote line: 9.5 mm or 15 mm for these E1.S drives, 7.5 mm for the Kioxia E3.S drive. Solidigm offers cold plate cooling in the 9.5 mm E1.S size. In these two Kioxia lines E3.S reaches twice the capacity per slot.
