Hybrid storage
Hybrid storage combines fast NVMe or SSD drives with high capacity HDDs in one system, using each tier for what it does best.
Hybrid storage is a system configuration that combines solid state drives with hard disk drives in the same chassis, pairing each for what it does best. Fast NVMe or SATA SSDs handle the operating system, active datasets, and scratch space, while HDDs supply low cost bulk capacity for archives and cold data. The two tiers connect through caching, where the SSD holds a working copy of hot data, or tiering, where software moves files between drives based on access frequency.
A typical build pairs two 2 TB NVMe drives, mirrored for the OS and working files, with six 16 TB HDDs in RAID 6. That combination yields about 64 TB of usable archive space. Caching layers such as ZFS's L2ARC or a dedicated cache card keep frequently read blocks on flash, cutting repeat read latency from milliseconds to microseconds. The bulk of the data stays on spinning disk.
When specing storage, hybrid setups make sense for a small hot dataset paired with a large cold archive. Workloads with uniformly random access across the whole dataset get more benefit from all flash.
