Strix Halo
Strix Halo is AMD's codename for the Ryzen AI Max 300 series, such as the Max+ 395 with a 40-unit GPU and up to 128 GB of shared memory.
Strix Halo is AMD's codename for the Ryzen AI Max 300 series of laptop and desktop processors. Each one combines Zen 5 CPU cores, a Radeon GPU and a neural processing unit (NPU) in one package. The CPU and GPU draw from one pool of low-power DDR5X (LPDDR5X) memory, so data passes between them without copies. The 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395 tops the series.
The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 pairs its 16 Zen 5 cores with a Radeon 8060S GPU of 40 compute units. Its NPU is rated at up to 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). It takes up to 128 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 on a 256-bit bus, which AMD rates at 256 GB/s. AMD's Variable Graphics Memory setting dedicates up to 96 GB of a 128 GB system to the GPU, which can address 112 GB in total. AMD says that is enough to run 4-bit language models of up to 128 billion parameters.
Pick Strix Halo to run one large model locally that will not fit in a single graphics card's memory, when speed is secondary. Pick a discrete GPU with more memory bandwidth when tokens per second decide it, since token speed scales with bandwidth and this chip has 256 GB/s.
