Threadripper PRO vs Xeon W
Threadripper PRO and Xeon W are AMD's and Intel's single-socket workstation CPU platforms, differing in cores, PCIe lanes, and ISV support.
Threadripper PRO and Xeon W are the single-socket CPU platforms built for professional workstations rather than desktops or dual-socket servers. AMD's line runs on WRX-series boards with eight channels of registered ECC memory and a large PCIe budget. Intel's runs on W-series boards, with the W-3400 and later parts also on eight channels. Both target CAD, rendering, and simulation work that needs more memory bandwidth and expansion than a desktop chip provides.
The top AMD parts on WRX90 reach 96 cores and 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes, and take up to 2 TB of DDR5 ECC memory. Intel's W790 platform tops out lower, in the 56 to 60 core range depending on generation, with 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes. A render or simulation node on the AMD side fits more threads and more full-width cards in one chassis. The Intel side appears more often, verbatim, on a software vendor's certified hardware list, which matters when a support contract references one.
Pick AMD when cores and PCIe expansion per dollar decide it, such as multi-GPU rendering nodes. Pick Intel when the application vendor certifies that platform specifically, or a support agreement requires it.
