Threadripper vs Threadripper PRO
Threadripper runs on TRX50 boards with four memory channels and 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Threadripper PRO runs on WRX90 with eight channels and 128 lanes.
Threadripper and Threadripper PRO are AMD's two workstation processor lines for the sTR5 socket. Threadripper is the high-end desktop part, sold for TRX50 motherboards with four memory channels. Threadripper PRO is the professional workstation part, built for WRX90 boards with eight channels. A PRO chip also fits a TRX50 board, but only WRX90 provides its full eight channels and 128 lanes. The current generation of both is the Zen 5 based 9000 series.
The Threadripper 9980X has 64 cores. TRX50 gives it four channels of registered DIMM (RDIMM) memory, up to 1 TB, and 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes. The Threadripper PRO 9995WX has 96 cores. WRX90 gives it eight channels, up to 2 TB, and 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Both run RDIMM at up to 6,400 MT/s with error-correcting code (ECC) enabled by default. AMD lists PRO manageability and PRO security features for the WRX90 platform only.
Choose Threadripper PRO on WRX90 for more than four x16 GPUs, more than 1 TB of memory, or a fleet that needs AMD's PRO manageability. Choose Threadripper on TRX50 for up to four x16 GPUs, which use 64 of its 80 lanes.
