Workstation GPU vs gaming GPU
Workstation GPUs use the same silicon as gaming cards but add ECC memory, more VRAM, and drivers certified against professional software.
A workstation GPU is a professional-line card, Nvidia's RTX PRO or AMD's Radeon PRO. It runs the same silicon as the gaming range, validated and configured for professional software. The main difference is the driver. Professional cards ship on a branch tested against specific released versions of CAD, simulation, and content-creation applications. Gaming drivers are tuned for frame rates in new titles and ship far more often.
Memory is the other split. Nvidia's RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell carries 96 GB of ECC GDDR7 on the same GB202 die as the GeForce RTX 5090, which ships 32 GB without ECC. That extra capacity comes from mounting memory chips on both sides of the board, a clamshell layout gaming cards skip to hold their price. The professional part also error-checks its VRAM, the same protection ECC gives system memory, and lists at several times the price of the consumer card cut from that die.
Buy the professional card when the certified list names it, when a dataset needs more VRAM than any gaming card offers, or when a support contract depends on it. Without a certification requirement, the gaming card is the same architecture for less money.
